D.T. Fleming

LOCATION:  One mile North of Kapalua

PARKING:   Nice paved parking lots.

ACCESS:  Very easy access from parking lot.

BEACH:  Very large and sandy.  Shady areas are available.  As you see in the below photos, it can be secluded at times.

SWIMMING:   Be very careful of the shorebreak on the left side.  It can be very powerful and cause serious injury as one's body is slammed into the sand.  I have personally watched healthy teens taken away in ambulances.  There are lifeguards so ask them about the current conditions.  Normally the current is outward in front of the lifeguard station and inward to the right of the station.  If the surf isn't big, this is a great swimming beach.  Contrary to some other reviews, I have never seen a steep slope or substantial backwash at Fleming.  Stay to the left of the lifeguard station to avoid the outward current and to stay in the sandy portion of the beach.

SNORKELING:  On calm days, the area to the right is fairly nice snorkeling.  Turtles hang out there often.

BOOGIE BOARDING:  In the center of the bay, the waves tend to come in evenly and it can be a good place for beginner boogie boarders if the waves aren't too big.  One is able to stand up waist high and jump on the board in about 1/2 of the beach. At the far left (South) end, can be a shore break called "gas chambers."  That area if the waves are big is best left to the expert boogie boarders. If you have experience, boogie boarding can be done on the right side as well.  See below.

SURFING:  On the right (North) side, there is very good surfing in the winter months (North swell).  Avoid the very right side near shore as there is a very shallow reef.
